Information on IUI treatment.
The
IUI treatment cycle starts in the beginning of your cycle. When the
menstruation starts you should call the clinic, tel. 515 8100, and
report your 1st day of menstruation. You will come for an ultrasound
examination 1-3 days later and start on fertility medication. This
medication consists of subcutanenous injections. The doctor or nurse will teach
you the injection technique. A few more ultrasound scans will be required to evaluate the development of the ovarian follicles ( usually between the 6th and 12th days ). When the ovarian
follicle is mature you will administer an hCG ( Ovitrelle ) injection to induce
ovulation. Insemination will take place 32-36 hours later. The insemination
is usually done in the morning and your partner will need to produce
and bring in a semen sample and 1-2 hours later insemination will be performed. The insemination is a simple procedure where the prepared
sperm is injected into the uterine cavity using a small catheter. The
procedure takes 5-10 min. and is not painful. You can leave the clinic
right after the procedure and proceed with normal activity. Please call the clinic two weeks
after the insemination to let us know if menstruation has begun.
Doseage of FSH in an IUI cycle
A
low dose of FSH is used in order to avoid multiple pregnancy . The
response is assessed by ultrasound. Occasionally hyper stimulation occurs. If this happens we might have to cancel the IUI cycle and
advise contraceptive measures.
When to administer the FSH injections
We suggest that the injections are done in the morning between 7-11 am.
Can the stimulation go wrong?
The
purpose of the stimulation is to mature between one and three
follicles. If more follicles mature we cancel further stimulation in
that cycle to avoid multiple pregnancy.
Pregnancy rate in IUI
16-18 % of women become pregnant after each attempt and 30% after 3 attempts.
When is the pregnancy test done?
A pregnancy
test is done if the menstruation has not started 2 weeks after the
insemination. This is either done by blood test or via a urine
sample test. If the pregnancy test is positive an ultrasound examination is performed, two weeks later to confirm the pregnancy. This is followed by
standard anti-natal care.
What if the IUI cycle is not sucessful?
Usually we recommend up to 4 IUI attempts. If this is not successful we recommend further treatment in IVF.
